Description
The temperature was 15 degrees F. yesterday morning (4/4/23) at 5:30 when I shot this image at Buffalo Park, Flagstaff. After some ho-hum walking on the park’s main path, I was very excited to glimpse water, always a precious commodity in this dry alpine area. (This pond is truly ephemeral, definitely less often present than absent, but we have had a huge amount of snow which is now melting.)
As I mounted my OM-1 camera with 40-150mm lens on my tripod I began to compose the shot. I wanted the dark to frame the light, and the overall image to be a kind of funnel—foregrounding the pond in wide view, with the dark water and trees framing the dawn skies beyond. I experimented with different metering modes in order to capture bright and dark in one image, smoothing out the overall light. So, setting my ISO at 200, shutter speed 1.6 seconds, f/7.1, and focal distance 73mm, I clicked the shutter.
